Jal Jhulni Ekadashi Overview
On the day of Jal Jhulni Ekadashi, King Bali worshiped the Vamana avatar of Vishnu. This Ekadashi is also known as Vamana Ekadashi and Parivartini Ekadashi. On this day, women and men keep fast and worship Lord Vishnu with full rituals. According to mythological beliefs, on the day of Ekadashi, Lord Vishnu changes his side while sleeping.
Jal jhulni Ekadashi is celebrated every year on Ekadashi of Shukla Paksha of Bhadprad. Lord Vamana is worshiped on this day. In some places, this day is celebrated as the sun worship of Lord Krishna (the auspicious event after the birth).
Jal Jhulni Ekadashi Vrat Katha
It is about the time of Mahabharata. Emperor Yudhishthira started saying O Lord! Describe the Ekadashi falling in Bhadrapada. What is the name of this Bhadrapada Shukla Ekadashi, what is its method and also explain its importance. Then Lord Krishna said – I will tell you this story in detail, which frees you from sins and gives salvation, listen carefully to it.
Lord Shri Krishna addressed Yudhishthira and started saying that O Emperor! Today I am going to tell you a story that destroys all sins. At the time of Tretayuga, there was a demon named Bali. Bali was my great devotee. He used to worship me regularly in different ways and used to organize havan etc. But due to his enmity with Indra, he had established his control over the entire Indraloka. Disturbed by the sufferings of the sacrifice, all the deities gathered and went to seek help from God. Brihaspati including Indra Dev bowed down and started praying before God. After which I assumed the form of Vamana and took the fifth incarnation on earth and then conquered the mighty king Bali.
Hearing these words of Lord Krishna, a question arose in Yudhishthira’s mind and he asked, O Keshav! How did you defeat that mighty demon in Vamana avatar? Shri Krishna replied that I disguised as a Vamana Brahman and when Bali was performing Yagya with Brahmins. Then I reached there and begged Bali for just three steps of land.
King Bali thought that three steps of land is very less and understanding this, he assured me of giving me three steps of land. After which I gave the vision of my four-armed form to Bali and placed the position in Bhuloka, thigh in Bhuvarloka, waist in heaven, stomach in Mahaloka, heart in Janalok, throat in Yamlok and mouth in Satyaloka, and placed my head on it.
After all this I said to King Bali that O king! One step was completed from earth, the other from heaven. Where should I put the third step now? After this, as there was no place left in the whole universe, Bali finally bowed his head and I put my third step on his head. After which he went towards Hades. Seeing his devotion and dedication towards me, I gave this assurance to Bali that I will always be around you. After which my statue was established at his ashram on the day of Shukla Ekadashi of Bhadrapada month as per the advice of Bali.
Similarly, O Rajan! On this Ekadashi, Lord Narayana, who has gone into yoga nidra, takes his turn while sleeping, so it is considered best to worship Lord Vishnu, the creator of the universe, on this Ekadashi. Along with this, silver, copper curd, rice etc. should be donated on this day. Jagran must be done at night.
Whoever observes the fast of this Ekadashi according to the law, gets freedom from all kinds of sins and attains the supreme abode after death. Anyone who listens or reads this story gets the result equivalent to a thousand Ashvamedha Yagyas.
Jal Jhulni Ekadashi Vrat Katha – Worship Method:
- On this day, clean the place of worship in your house and take a bath and wear new clothes.
- After this, the idols of Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi should be installed.
- Offer incense, ghee lamp, incense sticks, yellow flowers, and fruits.
- While offering bhog to Lord Vishnu, recite Shri Vishnu Sahasranama and chant the mantra Om Namo Bhagwate Vasudevaya.
- After offering it, distribute it among the people as prasad.
- Do not eat food and eat fruit on the day of Jal Jhulni Ekadashi.
