Parivartini Ekadashi Overview

We all know the importance of Ekadashi fasting, but there are also stories related to different Ekadashi dates, through which you can know about the glory of these different Ekadashi dates. There are 24 Ekadashis in a year, but the number of them is 26 in the year in which there are more months. Here we are telling you about Parivartini Ekadashi.

Parivartini Ekadashi is also known as Dol Gyaras. By observing this Ekadashi fast, the known and unknown sins of a person are destroyed.

Parivartini Ekadashi Vrat Katha:

Once Yudhishthira had a desire to know from Lord Krishna about Parivatarni Ekadashi fast. Then Shri Krishna told him about Parivatarni Ekadashi. He said that in Tretayuga, Daityaraj Bali was an exclusive devotee of Lord Vishnu. Indra and the gods were frightened by his might. He was in control of Indralok. Fearing his fear, all the gods went to Lord Vishnu.

All the gods, including Indra, prayed to Lord Vishnu to get rid of the fear of demon sacrifice. Then Lord Vishnu took his Vamana avatar. After that he went to the demon king Bali and asked him for three steps of land in charity. Bali promised to give three steps of land to Vamana Dev.

Then Vamana Dev assumed his formidable form. After that measured heaven in one step and earth in the other step. Then he asked Bali where to keep his third step. Then he said, Oh Lord! Put the third step on his head. Saying this he bowed his head before the Lord.

After this Prabhu Vamana placed his third step on his head. Pleased with his devotion, Lord Vishnu sent him to Hades. In this way the purpose of Vamana avatar of Lord Vishnu was fulfilled and the deities got freedom from the fear and terror of sacrifice.

Shri Krishna told Yudhishthira that those who observe a fast on Parivatarni Ekadashi and worship Lord Vishnu, they get freedom from all sins.

Significance of Parivartini Ekadashi:
Parivartini Ekadashi is also known as Pashrava Ekadashi or Padma Ekadashi. Fasting on this day is considered helpful in removing obstacles in life. Along with Lord Vishnu, Goddess Lakshmi is also worshiped on this day. Ekadashi fasting starts from sunset a day before and is observed on the next day of Ekadashi till after sunrise. The result of fasting is obtained by doing Parana only in the auspicious time of Parana. It is said that Vamana avatar of Lord Vishnu is worshiped on this day. On this day Lord Vishnu in the form of Vamana had asked King Bali to donate everything to him. Pleased with his devotion, Lord Vishnu handed over his idol. For this reason it is also called Vaman Gyaras. The importance of its fast is considered similar to that of Vajpegya Yagya.
