Krishna Janmashtami Vrat Katha Overview
In India, the festival of Krishna Janmashtami is celebrated with great pomp and respect. In Hinduism, it is believed that Devaki, a sister who was in jail after the atrocities of brother Kansa, gave birth to Sri Krishna as her eighth child on the Ashtami Tithi of Bhadrapada Krishna Paksha. Lord Vishnu incarnated to free the earth from the tyranny and terror of Kansa.
According to this story, the festival of Krishna Janmashtami is celebrated every year on the Ashtami day of Bhadrapada. According to the Puranas, Sri Krishna is an incarnation of Lord Vishnu, one of the Trimurtis. Every year people fast on this day to seek Krishna’s blessings and grace, offering midnight prayers along with rituals. They sing hymns and celebrate birthdays. Temples are specially decorated for this day. Dahi-handi is also celebrated on Janmashtami in some places. On the day of Janmashtami, devotees keep fast according to their devotion.
Lord Krishna is specially worshipped. Child Gopal was born at midnight. So on the midnight of Janmashtami, the idol of Ladu Gopal present in the house is born. Then they are bathed and dressed in beautiful clothes. Puja is offered and worshiped with incense and lamp.Kanha is sacrificed. He especially likes milk, curd, butter. So the prasad is distributed to everyone after offering the bhog to the Lord.

Janmashtami Vrat Vidhi
- On the morning of the 8th day of Shravan Vada, take a bath in the holy water.
- Wear clean clothes.
- Listening to the story of Lord Krishna.
- Recitation of Bhagavad Gita and worship with fragrant sandalwood and flowers.
- Perform bhajans with various instruments.
- On the next day, have a brahma bhojan and do the cradles.
