Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY) scheme was launched in India by the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, New Delhi from Kharif 2016 season. National Insurance Company started participating in PMFBY from Rabi 2016 and covered 8 States and 2 UTs during last 5 seasons, i.e. Rabi 2016-17, Kharif & Rabi 2017 and 70,27,637 farmers in Kharif & Rabi 2018. was included.
The revised operational guidelines issued by the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, New Delhi are binding on all the stakeholders giving complete details about the scheme. It can be downloaded from www.pmfby.gov.in.
- To provide financial assistance to farmers suffering from crop loss/damage due to unforeseen events.
- Stabilizing farmers’ income to ensure continuity in farming
- To encourage farmers to adopt new and modern farming practices
- Ensuring the flow of credit to the agriculture sector will contribute to food security, crop diversification, and enhance the growth and competitiveness of the agriculture sector, besides protecting farmers from production risks.
