Samba Dashami is one of the rituals observed in Odisha, on the 10th day during the Shukla Paksha in Pausa month (December – January). The festival is also called ‘Dola Jatra’ or ‘Dola Mela’. It is believed that Lord Krishna married his consort Radha on this day. Hence, it is celebrated with great enthusiasm in Odisha.

Another puja is celebrated in the evening as part of the Samba Dasami ritual. This is the ‘Mahakala Puja’, in which special yams are offered to Yama. The women of the family then come forward to make a variety of cakes – manda pitha, kakra pitha, arisha pitha, biri laddo and makar chaula, chenna guda, dhan muan; Sweet foods like khiri, rasagola, hili, chenagaja, sweet yoghurt etc.

At noon, a teaspoon of ‘Chauna Mula’ with banana water in a bowl is taken (shaped like a small temple with Tulsi plant overhead). All cooked food is served on a plate The women of the family see the sun god through a bowl of banana water and offer all the food to the sun god. They read the legend of “Samba Dasami Brata Katha” and pray for the well-being of all members of the family.
