Reconsideration of Retirement Age for Government Employees: Official Response [2024]

In a recent Lok Sabha session held on December 4, 2024, Shri Tejasvi Surya raised an important query about potential changes in the retirement age for government employees. The question addressed key concerns about revising the superannuation age after completing 30 years of service or upon turning 60, whichever comes earlier.

This proposal aimed to create more employment opportunities for the youth, particularly for those born after the year 2000, by ensuring uniformity in civil services.

Government’s Response

Dr. Jitendra Singh, Minister of State in the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances, and Pensions, provided a detailed reply:

  1. No Proposal Under Consideration:
The government clarified that there is no current proposal to revise the retirement age of central government employees.
  2. Youth Employment Measures:
While changes to the retirement policy are not on the agenda, the government is actively working on several measures to promote youth employment:
    • Conducting Rozgar Melas to fill vacant positions across central ministries, departments, and public sector undertakings.
    • Time-bound recruitment drives in sectors such as education, health, and autonomous bodies.

These efforts aim to streamline the recruitment process and ensure timely filling of posts to boost employment opportunities for the younger generation.

What Does This Mean?

For aspiring government employees and those currently serving, this statement reaffirms the existing retirement norms while highlighting the government’s dedication to addressing unemployment among the youth.
