The Indian Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions has issued a notification on March 13th, 2023, amending the Indian Police Service (Probation) Rules, 1954. The amendment adds provisions for the designation of institutes other than the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration to award marks to probationers and hold examinations. The institutes will be designated in consultation with the Central Government. The amendment also updates several clauses in the rules to include these new provisions. The amendment rules are effective immediately upon their publication in the Official Gazette.
Indian Police Service (Probation) Rules Amended for Training Institutes Designation

NOTIFICATION
New Delhi, the 13th March, 2023
G.S.R. 177(E).- In exercise of the powers conferred by sub-section (1) of section 3 of the All India Services Act, 1951 (61 of 1951), the Central Government, after consultation with the State Governments, hereby makes the following rules further to amend the Indian Police Service (Probation) Rules, 1954, namely :-
- Short title and commencement.- (1) These rules may be called the Indian Police Service (Probation) Amendment Rules, 2023.
(2) They shall come into force on the date of their publication in the Official Gazette. - In the Indian Police Service (Probation) Rules, 1954, (hereinafter referred to as the said rules), in rule 5,-
(i) in sub-rule (1), after the words “the Lal Bahdur Shastri National Academy of Administration”, the words “or such institute as may be designated by the Lal Badadur Shastri National Academy of Administration in consultation with Central Government” shall be inserted;
(ii) in sub-rule (2), after the words “the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration”, the words “or such institute as may be designated by the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration in consultation with Central Government” shall be inserted.
- In the said rules, in rule 6, in sub–rule (2), for clause (a), the following clause shall be substituted, namely:-
“(a) The Director, Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration or the head of such institute as may be designated by the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration in consultation with Central Government shall award to each probationer such marks out of a maximum of 470 marks as they may deem fit on the results of the examination held at the end of the Foundational Course”.
- In the said rules, in rule 10, in sub-rule (1), in clause (ii), after the words the “Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration”, the words “or such institute as may be designated by the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration in consultation with Central Government” shall be inserted.
- In the said rules, in rule 11, in sub-rule (1), after the words “Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy”, the words “or such institute as may be designated by the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration in consultation with Central Government” shall be inserted.
- In the said rules, the rule 14,-
(i) in sub-rule (1), in clause (a), after the words “the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration”, the words “or such institute as may be designated by the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration in consultation with Central Government” shall be inserted;
(ii) in sub-rule (2), after the words “the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration”, the words “or such institute as my be designated by the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration in consultation with Central Government” shall be inserted;
(iii) in sub-rule (3), after the words “the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration”, the words “or such institute as may be designated by the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration in consultation with Central Government” shall be inserted.
