The Government of India’s Ministry of Railways, through the Railway Board, has issued a reminder to all Zonal Railways and Public Utilities to ensure the timely filling of promotional vacancies through various modes such as selection, non-selection, Trade Test, Limited Departmental Competitive Examination (LDCE), and General Departmental Competitive Examination (GDCE). The instructions were last reiterated in a letter from the Board dated 26.05.2022. The All India Railwaymen’s Federation (AIRF) had raised concerns that GDCE examinations were not being conducted regularly by the Zonal Railways. The Board has now reiterated that Railways should make use of the GDCE scheme to fill direct recruitment quota vacancies in a timely manner, and Zonal Railways should plan for GDCE intake when placing indents for direct recruitment vacancies.

As the Railway administrations are aware, instructions have been issued from time to time emphasizing the need for timely filling of promotional vacancies by all modes viz. selection/non-selection/Trade Test/Limited Departmental Competitive Examination (LDCE)/General Departmental Competitive Examination (GDCE) etc. The instructions were last reiterated vide Board’s letter of even number dated 26.05.2022(RBE No. 62/2022).
During a separate meeting of AIRF with Chairman & CEO, the Federation (AIRF) mentioned that GDCE was not being conducted regularly by the Zonal Railways, and it was decided to reiterate Board’s instructions for timely holding of GDCE examination.
Accordingly, it is reiterated that Railways should ensure making use of the scheme of General Departmental Competitive Examination (GDCE) to fill up the direct recruitment quota vacancies timely and for this Zonal Railways should plan for GDCE intake at the time of placing indents for direct recruitment vacancies.
