Jivitputrika Vrat Katha Overview
The name of Jivitputrika Vrat is derived from the name of Jimutavahana. Jivitputrika or Jitiya fasting for the protection of the son has special significance. On this day, mothers observe a Nirjala fast for the protection and well being of their children. The name of Hijivitputrika Vrat is derived from the name of Jimutavahana. Jitiya Vrat is observed on the Ashtami Tithi of Krishna Paksha of Ashwin month. In the year 2021, it will be celebrated from 28 to 30 September. It is also called Jitiya or Jivitputrika Vrat. On this day, mothers keep a fast for the long life, health and happy life of their children. This fast begins with bathing on Saptami and ends with Parana on Navami.
Like Teej, Jitiya fast is also done without diet and dehydration. Like the Chhath festival, there is a tradition of eating and drinking during the Jitiya fast. This festival is celebrated for three days. After bathing and eating on Saptami Tithi, women observe Nirjala fast on Ashtami Tithi for the prosperity and progress of children. After this the fast is broken on the Navami Tithi i.e. the next day, that is, the fast is broken.
Jivitputrika Vrat Katha:
Long time ago, there used to be a prince of Gandharvas whose name was Jimutavahana. Very pure soul, kind and always engaged in philanthropy, Jimutavahana had no attachment to the royal palace at all. But how long would the father take care of? After taking Vanaprastha, he handed over everything to Jimutavahana and started walking. But Jimutavahana immediately made up his mind to serve his father by staying in the forest himself, handing over all his responsibilities to his brothers. Now one day while traveling in the forest, the jimutavahana came a long way. He saw an old woman moaning a lot. Said to Jimutavahana that the suffering of others was seen, he found out the whole thing, then it came to know that she is a serpent woman and today it is the turn of her only son to sacrifice the bird king Garuda.
Jimutavahana consoled him and said that in place of his son, he himself would be the food of the bird king. Now Jimutavahana wrapped in the cloth in which the woman’s child was wrapped. As soon as the time came, the bird king Garuda took him away. When he had come a long way while flying, the bird king was surprised that why is this food of mine not screaming today, he has no fear of death at all. After reaching his place, he took the introduction of Jimutavahana. Jimutavahana narrated the whole story. Pakshiraj was pleased with the kindness and courage of Jimutavahana and while donating his life, promised not to take sacrifices in future also. It is believed that since then this fast is kept for the long life and welfare of the children.
