Shitala Mata ni Varta Overview
The festival of Shravan Vada Satam is celebrated as Shitala Satam. Adhyashakti Shitala Mata is extremely pleased with the devotees who truly understand the importance of sadhana-pooja and karma-pooja and perform the pujas.
Auspicious women perform this fast on the day of Shravan Vad Satam. The fasting person should get up early in the morning and take a bath with cold water and eat fast food throughout the day. Do not light the stove on this day. Telling the story of Mother Shitla by lighting a dim lamp. By doing this Vrata one gets wealth, children and good luck. The day before Satam is called the culinary Chhath. After cooking on the sixth day of cooking, the sisters worship the fireplace, gas stove, etc., and on the next day, on the seventh day of Shitla, they get up early in the morning, bathe in cold water, cover the fireplace or stove, etc., and plant mangoes in it.
Vrat Katha of Shitla Satam:
In a village Derani-Jethani lived with her mother-in-law. Both the parents had one son given to them by God. The elder daughter-in-law was jealous, while the younger one was very kind, naive and loving.
Once the day of Ranghanachath came in the month of Shravan. The mother-in-law made Nani Bahu crawl. Nani used to cry till midnight. At that time, the boy sleeping in the carriage started crying. So leaving all the work, the daughter-in-law took the boy and went to the side a little and due to exhaustion fell asleep. The stove was burning. The stove was burning. Went for a walk in Shitla after midnight. They wandered around and reached Nani Vahu’s house and started making fun of the hearth. But what is this? Instead of feeling cold, the cold body started to feel cold. He got burns all over his body. So he cursed the little daughter-in-law that your stomach burns like my body burns.
Wahu woke up in the morning and saw that the stove was burning and the boy who was sleeping on the side was dead. His whole body was burnt. The little daughter-in-law started crying. He realized that mother Shitala must have cursed him. She went to mother-in-law crying and told everything. Sasuma consoled her and said that everything would be fine if she went to Mother Shitla and prayed. The child was put in a basket and came out very small. He saw two ponds on the way. Both the tanks were overflowing with water but no one was drinking their water. Anyone who drank it would die.
Seeing Nani Bahu, Talavadi said, “Where are you going sister?”
Nani Bahu said, “I am going to Shitala Mata to remove the curse.”
Talavadi said that sister, what sins have we committed that someone dies by drinking our water? Come and ask for the removal of our curse.
The young daughter-in-law proceeded from there. On the way she met two bulls. Bells were hanging in their docks and both were fighting. Seeing Nani Bahu, both the bulls asked that sister, where are you going?
Bahu said I am going to remove my curse.
The bulls said that what sin have we committed that we are fighting forever, you come and ask for the remedy of our curse.
Nani went a long way. A short distance away, he saw a Doshima sitting scratching his hair under a bordi tree.
Seeing Bahu, Doshima said, “Sister, my head is very itchy, just look at it.” Was very confused. Although she was in a hurry, she put her boy in Doshima’s lap and sat down to weave.
Within a few minutes, Doshima’s itching was gone. He blessed Bahu and said that “as my head is relieved, so should your stomach be relieved” as soon as he said this, a miracle happened. The boy on Doshima’s lap revived. I was very surprised. She came to know that this Doshima was none other than Shetelamata. So she fell at his feet.
The bridegroom asked to remove the curse of Talavadis. Shitla Mata said that in the previous birth these two Talavdis mourned and used to quarrel everyday. Do not give vegetable-milk to anyone and if you give it, give it with water. Hence no one drinks their water. But if you drink their water, their sins will be destroyed. Then the groom asked about the curse of the bulls. In response to that, Shitla said that in the last generation both were Derani-Jethani. He was so jealous that he did not let anyone crush him. Hence, both have become bulls in this birth and there is a ring of bells in their lives. If you leave the ring of this bell, their sins will be removed.
The little daughter-in-law was happy, took the boy back with the blessings of Shitalama. On the way he met the bulls. The bride-to-be left the folds of the khanti from his neck. They stopped fighting. Walking further, he came to Talavadi and drank a cup full of water to remove his curse. Then everyone started drinking its water. She came home and told everything to Sasuma. His wife became jealous of him.
In the second Shravan month, when Radhan Chhath came, Jethani thought that I should do the same as Derani. So give me Shitla Mata Darshan. She kept the stove burning that night. In the evening, Shitla came to Bigi Bahu’s house and started playing in the hearth. Hence his body was burnt, he cursed that his stomach should be burnt as my body was burnt.
When Jethani got up in the morning, he saw that the boy was dead in the horse. Instead of being saddened by this incident, Jethani was instead happy and like Derani, she went out carrying the boy in a basket.
On the way Talavadi asked where the sister is going?
Jethani twisted his mouth and said, “What do you want?” Don’t see that my son is dead and I go to meet mother cold. Talavadi said that the sister should come and do some work for us. But Jethani immediately refused. Next he found two bulls. So Jethani refused even the bulls to do his work. Under the tree ahead, Shitala Mata in the form of Doshima was sitting scratching her head.
He asked to see the head here. He angrily refused and said am I nawari should I scratch your head? Do not see my son is dead. Jethani searched the whole day, but she could not find the cold mother anywhere. So she came home crying. O, give fruit to all those who have given birth to a mother like a cold mother.
Ceremony of Shitla Satam Vrat.
- The hearth is not lit on the Satam day, so the next day of the Satam i.e. the sixth day is made with two days of cooking.
- At this time there is no rule about cooking a dish, a housewife can make it to stay good (healthy) for two days.
- On the seventh (7) day of Shravan, get up early in the morning and take a bath with cold water. Fasting throughout the day.
- Do not light the stove and listen to the story of the cold. Cooler (wheat flour + jaggery + jaggery) is made to offer prasadi to Shitla Mata.
- Visit the temple of Shitla Mata and worship with a cooler, lamp, a coconut.
- In Gujarat’s Saurashtra, a village fair is held on this day.
