Salman Rushdie Biography Overview

Ahmed Salman Rushdie was born in Bombay on 19 June 1947 during the British Raj, into an Indian Kashmiri Muslim family. He is the son of Anis Ahmed Rushdie, a Cambridge-educated lawyer-turned-businessman, and Negin Bhatt, a teacher. Anis Ahmed Rushdie was dismissed from the Indian Civil Services (ICS) after it emerged that his birth certificate submitted by him had changed to make him appear younger than he was.

  • Rushdie has three sisters. He was educated at Cathedral and John Connon School, Bombay, Rugby School in Warwickshire, and King’s College, Cambridge, where he read history.
  • Salman Rushdie is the author of thirteen novels: Grimus, Midnight’s Children (which was awarded the Booker Prize in 1981), Shame, The Satanic Verses, Haroun and the Sea of Stories, The Moor’s Last Sigh, The Ground Beneath Her Feet, Fury, Shalimar the Clown, The Enchantress of Florence, Luka and the Fire of Life, Two Years Eight Months and Twenty-Eight Nights, and The Golden House.
  • His fourteenth novel, Quichotte, is forthcoming from Random House in the Fall of 2019.
  • The publication of the novel “The Satanic Verses” in September 1988 caused a lot of outrage in the Muslim world due to what some people saw as an irreverent representation of Muhammad.
  • His book, Luka and the Fire of Life, a sequel to Haroun and the Sea of Stories, was published in November 2010. It received positive reviews.
  • Earlier this year, he said that he was writing a memoir about his life called Joseph Anton: A Memoir and published in September 2012.
  • 2015 saw the release of a novel by Rushdie called Two Years Eight Months and Twenty-Eight Nights, which uses his old favorite style of magic realism.
  • In 2019, Rushdie published his fourteenth novel Quichotte. It is inspired by the classic Spanish novel Don Quijote.
