Nirjala Ekadashi Vrat Katha in Hindi

This Ekadashi is also special and difficult in the fasting of all Ekadashis. According to the Hindi calendar, the fast of Nirjala Ekadashi is observed on the Ekadashi of Shukla Paksha of Jyeshtha month.

Nirjala Ekadashi Vrat Katha

Bhimsen started saying to Vyasji that O father! Brothers Yudhishthira, Mother Kunti, Draupadi, Arjuna, Nakula and Sahadeva etc all ask to fast for Ekadashi, but Maharaj, I tell them that brother, I can worship God’s power, etc., I can also give charity but without food. Can not live without. On this Vyasji started saying that O Bhimsen! If you consider hell to be bad and heaven to be good, then do not eat food on both the Ekadashis of every month.

Bhima started saying that O father! I have already said that I cannot bear hunger. If there is only one fast in a year, then I can keep it, because there is a fire named Vrika in my stomach, so I cannot live without eating. Eating food keeps her calm, so even a complete fast is it difficult to stay without food even for a single time.

Therefore, you tell me such a fast, which has to be done only once in a year and I can attain heaven. Shri Vyasji started saying that O son! Many great sages have created many scriptures etc., from which heaven can be attained without money without any effort. Similarly, in the scriptures, the fast of Ekadashi of both the sides is kept for salvation.

Hearing the words of Vyasji, Bhimsen became frightened by the name of going to hell and started trembling and saying what should I do now? I cannot do two fasts in a month, yes I can try to do one fast in a year. Therefore, if I can be liberated by fasting for one day in a year, then tell me such a fast. Hearing this, Vyasji started saying that the Ekadashi that comes in the Shukla Paksha of Jyeshtha month between the Sankranti of Vrishabha and Mithun, its name is Nirjala. You fast on that Ekadashi.

During the fast of this Ekadashi, water is prohibited except bathing and eating. Water should not be more than six months in Achaman, otherwise it becomes like drinking. One should not eat food on this day, because eating food breaks the fast. If one does not take water on Ekadashi from sunrise to sunrise of Dwadashi, then he gets the fruits of fasting for all Ekadashis. On Dwadashi, one should wake up before sunrise, take bath etc. and give donations to Brahmins. After this, after feeding the hungry and satpatra Brahmin, then you should eat food. Its fruit is equal to the entire Ekadashi of a whole year.

Vyasji started saying that O Bhimsen! God Himself has told this to me. The merit of this Ekadashi is greater than all pilgrimages and donations. Just by being waterless for one day a person becomes free from sins. Those who observe a fast on Nirjala Ekadashi, at the time of their death, the eunuchs do not come and surround them, but the councilors of God take them to heaven by making them sit in the Pushpak Vimana.

Therefore, the best in the world is the fast of Nirjala Ekadashi. Therefore, this fast should be done with diligence. On that day Om Namo Bhagwate Vasudevaya Mantra should be recited and cow donation should be done. Thus Bhimsen performed this fast as per the orders of Vyasji. Therefore this Ekadashi is also called Bhimseni or Pandava Ekadashi. Before fasting Nirjala, pray to God that O Lord! Today I observe a Nirjala fast, I will take food on the second day.

I will observe this fast with devotion, so by your grace all my sins will be destroyed. On this day a pitcher filled with water should be covered with a cloth and donated along with gold. Those who observe this fast get the result of donating gold for crores of moments and those who perform sacrifices on this day cannot be described. By fasting on this Ekadashi one attains Vishnulok. Those who eat food on this day are like Chandalas. They end up going to hell. One who observes the fast of Nirjala Ekadashi, whether he is a Brahma killer, drinks alcohol, steals or has enmity with the Guru, but due to the effect of this fast, he goes to heaven.

O son of Kunti! Men or women who observe this fast with devotion, they should perform the following actions. Worship of God first, then cow donation, sweets and dakshina should be given to Brahmins and an urn filled with water must be donated. Donation of food, clothes, uphaan (shoes) etc. should also be done on the day of Nirjala. Those who read or listen to this story with devotion, they surely attain heaven.

The importance of this fast has also been described in various religious texts. It is believed that keeping the fast of Nirjala Ekadashi gives the fruits of fasting for all Ekadashis, but according to the rules of fasting, during the fast of Nirjala Ekadashi, one has to give up water for the whole day except bath and achaman. It is also known as Pandava Ekadashi or Bhimsen Ekadashi.
