After some time, Maharaj Shantanu was infatuated with a young woman named Satyavati and expressed his desire to marry Satyavati. . But Satyavati’s father asked Shantanu for a promise that Satyavati’s eldest son would be the successor of Hastinapur.

Shantanu did not give any such promise to Satyavati’s father and returned to his palace, seeing his father quietly and upset, Devavrata tried to find out what is the matter that is making his father so restless. . When Devavrat came to know that his father wanted to marry a girl named Satyavati and Satyavati’s father had made a promise to Maharaj Shantanu. So Devvrat took water in his hand and took a vow that he would remain celibate for life. This promise of his was called Bhishma Pratigya and Devvrat came to be known as Bhishma. Pleased with this promise of Devvrat, Maharaj Shantanu granted Devvrat the boon of death. Bhishma promised to remain celibate for life and not to take the throne and by giving kingdom to both the sons of Satyavati continued to protect them equally.

In the Mahabharata war, he became the commander of the Kauravas and on the tenth day of the Mahabharata, Arjun pierced the body of Bhishma Pitamah with arrows by confronting Shikhandi. Bhishma Pitamah stayed on the bed of arrows for 58 days.
