Amavasya Tithi is considered very important in Hindu religious beliefs. According to mythology, a Brahmin lived in Kanchipuri with his wife Dhanavati, seven sons and daughter Gunavati. The name of that brahmin was Devaswami. Devaswamy’s seven sons were married but his daughter was still a virgin. He had entrusted his eldest son to find the boy. One day a pundit saw Gunavati’s horoscope and told that Gunavati would become a widow due to the defects present in Devaswami’s horoscope. Everyone started asking that pundit the solution to deal with this problem. Describing the solution to this problem, the Pandit said that there is a washerwoman named Soma in Sinhala island, bring her here, her worship has so much power that she will save Gunavati from becoming a widow.
At the behest of Pandit, Devaswami’s younger son and Gunavati went to fetch Soma. On the way, after crossing the ocean, exhausted, he found a tree. Both of them started taking rest under that tree. There was also a vulture’s nest on that tree. There were vulture children in that nest who were listening to Gunavati and her brother. When the vulture tried to feed its children, those children refused to eat the food and said that first help these humans, then only we will eat food. Obeying the insistence of his children, the vulture left Gunavati and her brother in Singhal where Soma’s house was. Now both the brothers and sisters kept thinking of tricks to make Soma happy. Every morning both the brothers and sisters used to clean Soma’s house and daub it. Soma asked her daughter-in-law about this but her daughter-in-law lied to her that she does this cleaning. Soma was smart. She got up early the next morning and caught Gunavati and her brother cleaning up. She was very happy with the work of both and agreed to go to their village with both of them.
While leaving, Soma told her daughter-in-law that if someone dies, her body is not to be burnt and she has to wait till she comes. When Soma reached Gunavati’s village, Gunavati was to be married the next day. The next day after Saptapadi, Gunavati’s husband died. Soma immediately started worshiping Lord Vishnu and after worshiping started circumambulating the Peepal tree 108 times. After taking this remedy, Gunavati’s husband was back alive. When Soma returned to her home, she learned that her son Jamata and her husband had died. Soma did exactly as she did at Gunavati’s wedding. After worshiping Lord Vishnu, she started circumambulating the Peepal tree 108 times. By doing this both her husband and son became alive.
Mauni Amavasya Vrat Vidhi
- On the day of Mauni Amavasya, one should wake up in the Brahma Muhurta and take a bath in the Ganges or other holy rivers after retiring from daily activities.
- After taking bath, Lord Vishnu should be worshiped according to the method.
- While worshiping, offer yellow flowers, saffron, ghee, lamp and sandalwood to Lord Vishnu.
- Vishnu Chalisa or Vishnu Sahasranama should be recited on this day.
- Donating to Brahmins on the day of Mauni Amavasya gives special results.
- Donate to the needy on the day of Mauni Amavasya and worship Lord Vishnu in the evening.
