Govardhan Puja

Govardhan Puja is a Restricted holiday falls on November 15, 2020 Sunday as per Govt. Dopt 2020 holiday list. It is a Hindus festival and Regional holiday which comes next to Diwali in the month of Kartik, as the day Lord Krishna defeated the God Indra.

What people do on this day:

In this festival, the worshipers of Hinduism worship God by making cow’s idol in the courtyard of the house and worship them. After this, to appease Lord Giriraj, who is considered to be the deity of Braj, he offers food to Annakoot. The animals of cow and bull are bathed and worshiped with flower garlands, incense, sandalwood etc. Aarti is offered to the cows by offering them sweetmeats and performed pradakshina. The Pratikpada of Kartik Shukla Paksha is offered as an offering to God and raw-cooked food, fruits, flowers, various types of foods called Chhappan Bhoga. Then all the materials are distributed to your family and friends and the offerings are received.

Devotees celebrate Govardhan Puja by preparing a large variety of vegetarian food such as wheat, rice, curry of gram flour and leafy vegetables in order to offer them to Lord Krishna.

What is the story behind Govardhan Puja?

For Vaishnavas, this day commemorates the incident in the Bhagavata Puran when Bhagwan Shri Krishna lifted the Govardhan Hill to provide the villagers of Vrindavan shelter from torrential rains. The incident is seen to represent how God will protect all devotees who take singular refuge in him.

What do we do in Govardhan Puja?

Govardhan Puja is done a day after Diwali and the main aspect of this ritual is making a miniature hill using cow dung and mud. Chappan bhog (56 kinds of meals) is cooked and offered to Lord Krishna. The miniature Govardhan mountain is beautifully decorated with flowers.

When did Krishna lifted Govardhan?

Hindu Lord Krishna as Shrinathji who at age 7 lifted the Govardhan hills to save the people; shrine hanging [pichhavai].
