Naraka Chaturdashi is a Restricted holiday falls on November 14, 2020 Saturday as per Govt. Dopt 2020 holiday list. Narak Chaturdashi is an important Hindu festival that is celebrated on the day prior to Diwali all over India. It is the second day of the five-day-long festival of Deepavali/Diwali. The Hindu literature narrates that the asura (demon) Narakasura was killed on this day by Krishna, Satyabhama and Kali. The day is celebrated by early morning religious rituals and festivities follow on.

What people do on this day:

On this day Hindus get up earlier than usual. The men will rub their bodies in perfumed oils before bathing. Afterwards, clean clothes are worn; some people wear new ones. A large breakfast is enjoyed with relatives and friends. In the evening, a mix of bright and loud fireworks are set off in an atmosphere of joyful fun and noise. Special sweet dishes are served as part of the midday meal. House is lit with oil lamps during the evening.

What does chaturdashi mean?

In the Hindu calendar, Chaturdashi is the 14th day (Tithi) of the waxing phase or waning phase of the moon. This is the day prior to new moon (Amavasya) or full moon (Pournami). It has a great significance to Bengalis, as goddess Tara appeared to rishi vasistha on this tithi.

What should be done on narak chaturdashi?

In some part of Goa, Narak Chaturdashi is celebrated by making paper effigies of Narakasura filled with dried grass and firecrackers, which are created and burnt as a symbol of burning the evil. After burning these effigies, people return home to take scented oil bath and perform rituals.

Why is Naraka Chaturdashi celebrated?

In some regions of India, Kali Chaudas is the day allotted to the worship of Mahakali or Shakti and is believed that on this day Kali killed the asura (demon) Narakasura. Hence also referred to as Naraka-Chaturdashi, Kali Chaudas is day to abolish laziness and evil which create hell in our life and shine light on life.

Is chaturdashi good day?

Festivals celebrated on Chaturdashi Tithi. It is considered highly auspicious to worship Lord Shiva on this date. Worshippers of Lord Shiva celebrate this day with passion. It is auspicious to observe fast and worship Lord Shiva on this day.
