Rakshabandhan on August 3rd 2020

Rakshabandhan will be celebrated on August 3rd, Monday 2020 which is one of the most important festivals celebrated in India. This is an ancient Hindu festival also known as Rakhi Purnima. Raksha Bandhan, meaning “Knot of Protection”.

When is Raksha Bandhan observed?

Raksha Bandhan is observed on the last day of the Hindu lunar calendar month of Shraavana, which typically falls in August.  It is the full moon of the Hindu month ‘Shravana’. The expression “Raksha Bandhan,” Sanskrit, literally, “the bond of protection, obligation, or care,” is now principally applied to this ritual. Rakshabandhan celebrates the bond between brothers and sisters.

History of Raksha Bandhan:

It is said that the festival gained popularity after Rani Karnavati, the widowed queen of Chittor, sent a Rakhi to Mughal emperor Humayun when she was in need of his help. It is also believed that Draupadi tied Rakhi to Lord Krishna.

The festival of Rakshabandhan is on 3 August. The special thing is that this day is also the last Monday of Sawan. Along with this, there is also the full moon of Sawan on 3 August. This time Rakshabandhan is also going to be a combination of Sarvartha Siddhi and Ayushman Longevity, due to which Raksha Bandhan is going to be very auspicious this time.

Importance of Rakhi:

Indian history has several stories when brothers are said to have stepped up to protect their sisters during times of adversity. It is said that in the ancient times, queens used to send Rakhi to their neighbours symbolising brotherhood.

Rakshabandhan is a sacred festival of brother and sister. On this day, to mark their relationship, the sister ties a rakhi to the brother’s wrist and pledges to protect the brother and sister. This symbolises their emotional bond and the renews the vow of the brother to protect his sister.

Rakhis can also be used to celebrate other relationships between friends and neighbours According to Hindu Pachang, the festival of Rakshabandhan is celebrated on the full moon day of the month of Sawan.

Raksha Bandhan special:

The significance of this festival is so much that the postal department issues special envelopes at low cost, in which Rakhis can be sent to their faraway brothers. Indian Railways runs special trains to cherish the significance of this festival. Even though it takes only a few minutes to tie a Rakhi, but preparations are done many days in advance. Sisters choose special Rakhis for their brothers well before the festival. A brother manages to reach to his sister any-how for the moment where his sister would wait with empty-stomach to tie the ‘sacred thread’.
