DEFENCE SECTOR RECRUITMENT
52. SHRI MALLIKARJUN KHARGE:
Will the Minister of Defence be pleased to state:
(a) whether it is a fact that the Indian Army has not recruited any person in the last two years;
(b) if so, the reasons therefor;
(c) the total shortage of manpower in all three armed forces, including both officer and non-officer rank;
(d) the average annual recruitment in the Armed Forces since 2015;
(e) whether the average recruitment figure is more than the proposed annual intake of Agniveers; and
(f) if so, how will the shortage of manpower in the Armed Forces be met with?
ANSWER

IN THE MINISTRY OF DEFENCE
(a) & (b): No, Sir.
(c): Manpower shortages (depending on manpower requirements, Retirements, Premature retirements (PMR), invalidation are dynamic. Shortage with respect to authorized strength is:-
(i) Army – 64482 (as on 01.1.2020 and 116464 (as on 01.1.2022).
(ii) Navy – 13597 (as on 31.5.2022).
(iii) Indian Air Force – 5723 (as on 1.7.2022).
(d): The average annual recruitment in Army, Navy & Air Force is 60,000, 5332 and 5723 respectively.
(e) & (f): The matter is under subjudice in the Hon’ble Supreme Court of India.
